To Do List: Civic Duty……..CHECK

No matter your candidate preference or political leanings, it’s important to get out and vote today (if you’re reading this in the US, of course). Matt was up first, around 6:15 a.m. and hurried through the shower. I got up about 6:40, showered, and we left for our local polling place–a Lutheran church about two blocks from the house.

We got in line at 7:20 a.m. (first time we’ve had to wait at this location, including the 2004 national election), and by 8:10 a.m. we were inserting ballots into the machine. I was number 383 (Matt was 384), and that’s after slightly more than an hour. The line moved smoothly, people in line were friendly, election officials were efficient, and in general the entire process was rather pleasant. For me, it was an emotional experience (seriously–I took my ballot out of the sleeve, looked it over, and felt a little misty-eyed at the momentous occasion laid out in front of me). No matter who the ultimate winner is in our national election, we will make history with either an African-American president or a female vice president. No matter the final outcome, changes MUST take place within our government to reverse the challenging economic and social times we find ourselves mired in, and the promise of the future is what keeps us all moving forward.

Here’s to cooperation and consideration, no matter who is given the reigns after today’s dust settles (and I pray that it’s not a prolonged decision, like in 2000).

You mean that year in which the people’s wishes were denied? The one that made me question why the heck I even vote at all? The one that in part, inspired today’s rant about the electoral college on my blog? Yeah, that was brutal. Here’s hoping it never happens again. Here’s hoping today’s outcome is so clear that there is not one vote (or hanging chad) that needs to be recounted. Here’s hoping that one day the popular vote will be the only one that matters…..
